Whether it’s in life or in business… “If you’re not growing, you’re dying.”

When I was just getting started learning about self-improvement years ago, I can’t tell you how many times I was:

  • Spinning my wheels

  • Overthinking simple things

  • Spending too much time on the non-essentials

I would develop a deep work routine or a morning routine, stick with it for a few days or weeks, and then switch it up.

That’s not how you get better and make real progress.

Often when you’re left to your own devices, you can overthink and question your own capabilities.

It wasn’t until I started seeking out mentorship in multiple areas of my life that I actually started reaching my goals.

In the fitness space, I hired a personal trainer.

In the business space, I started working with a mentor.

In the personal space, my fiance (who’s a nurse) and I now sit down at least once a week and talk through everything we’re thinking about and going through in our personal lives.

It’s therapeutic for both of us… even though I struggle to comprehend any of the nursing terms she throws around.

These three areas are what I call a “Personal Board of Advisors.”

Who am I to think I can just figure all of these things out on my own?

Many of my founder friends share with me they had a similar experience early on in their businesses.

They were overthinking things and not making as much progress as they thought they should.

But all of that changed when they did one thing:

They created their own “Personal Board of Advisors.”

All corporations and legitimate businesses have a Board of Advisors… why shouldn’t you?

We all need people in our lives to hold us accountable to the things we say are important to us.

Whether that’s health and fitness, business, or faith and leadership, we all need coaches and mentors in life.

Think of it this way.. it doesn’t need to be a formal meeting every month where everyone gets together at once.

Just decide on 3-5 people you want to be on your board and meet with them 1-1 once a month or every week or whatever cadence works best for you.

I can honestly say…. having a personal board of advisors has been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made in my life and in business.

Thanks for reading!

Until next time,

Eric Higgs
