4 Ways Cross-Promotion Can Boost Your Newsletter

The Intelligent Marketer

Hey ,

Welcome back to The Intelligent Marketer, where over 12,260 growth-minded founders, agency owners, and marketers go to learn modern marketing strategies.

I’m always glad to be back sharing more insights into email newsletters and the benefits they can provide your business.

This week, I want to talk about cross-promotion.

I’ve raved about the various benefits of email newsletters for your business in the past. But this is a topic that often goes overlooked as a component of your newsletter.

Let’s take a closer look at how cross-promotion can benefit your business.

What Is Cross-Promotion?

Cross-promotion is when you promote another business, service, newsletter, etc. in exchange for something of value to you. Maybe promotions are a source of revenue for you or maybe the other business promotes your newsletter in exchange for you promoting theirs.

Whatever the agreement, it’s generally when one newsletter promotes some business or content in exchange for a similar promotion or payment on their part.

There are several advantages to this kind of cross-promotion, and email newsletters are uniquely able to use these advantages.

1. Strengthens Partner Relationships

This is probably the most obvious benefit to cross-promotions. When you promote a business in a complementary niche, you strengthen your partnership with them which is a win-win situation.

A business offering a service or product that complements yours is ideal for this kind of partnership. You promote their service, which is beneficial to your audience and the other business. Then, they promote your service, which is beneficial to their audience and to you.

Ideally, both your business and the other business grow their audience and, therefore, their revenue. You, the other business owner, and both of your audiences all benefit. It’s a pretty sweet deal for everyone.

2. Reaches New Audiences

Along the same lines, promoting a service or product through a partnership with a sponsor can grow your audience. People who are familiar with your sponsor or the business you’re promoting may not be familiar with you. This extra exposure of your newsletter can lead to a big boost in your subscriber count.

Keeping it all in perspective, this additional reach allows you to reach more people who can be helped by your offer.

3. Develops Niche Authority

Promoting other businesses in your niche or niches related to yours increases your authority in your audience’s eyes. By promoting those businesses related to yours, you show that you’re up-to-date in your niche. You know what’s going on, who’s offering great services, and who’s new to the market.

The more authority you show in your niche, the more your audience trusts your skills and opinions. When you come out with a new resource, they’ll now place a higher value on it because it came from you, the expert.

Increasing your niche authority also increases the likelihood that your audience will share your content with others they know are interested in your niche. You become a go-to resource in their eyes for your niche, so any time it comes up in conversation, you’re the one they think of.

4. Increases Subscriber Retention

When you partner with other businesses that are offering a discount or limited-time deal to your readers, that instantly increases the value of being a subscriber to your newsletter. If readers know that they receive specific benefits as a result of subscribing to your content, they’re not going anywhere for a long time.

This is also tied to your niche authority. If you show consistently that you can provide readers interested in your niche with discounts on products or services they’re interested in, your value to the niche is increased tremendously. The more value you add to your niche, the more weight your subscribers will place on your newsletter, which means the more likely they are to share it with others who share their interests.

This list isn’t exhaustive by any means, but it’s a good start to understanding how cross-promotion opportunities abound with email newsletters. Even better, if you’re just starting your newsletter but already have a promotional partnership with another business, it should be simple to incorporate that partnership into your newsletter. Just talk to your partner about your new content stream, and see if they’re interested in expanding your promotion to include your newsletter. It could be a simple and easy boost to your revenue.

Of course, the first thing is to start a newsletter if you haven’t already. We here at Summit Group truly believe it is one of the best decisions you can make for your business’s growth.
